Integrated technical upgrades across three hospital campuses
Under a long-term framework agreement, VMA is responsible for the comprehensive renewal of critical technical installations across three GZA hospital campuses, including associated residential care facilities. Our teams are carrying out a wide range of electrical and HVAC works in high-stakes environments, from patient and operating rooms to office and reception areas.

Multidisciplinary scope and strict compliance
The electrical teams, led by Nick Vranken (VMA Antwerp), are responsible for cable routing, fire detection, access control, and call systems. In parallel, the HVAC division under Luc Coremans (VMA Druart) is upgrading pumps and installing major systems, such as rooftop cooling units at Sint-Augustinus.
Hospital regulations are significantly more stringent than in schools or offices. Our teams are well-versed in these standards, especially in ensuring system redundancy. For instance, air handling systems in operating theatres must never fail—requiring sophisticated backup power and control mechanisms. VMA brings certified expertise to meet these demanding requirements.
Precision planning in 24/7 environments
Working in operational hospital environments presents unique scheduling challenges. Certain areas are accessible only outside service hours. VMA coordinates works during off-peak periods or creates temporary spaces to avoid disruption—such as during the renovation of the emergency department reception area.
Agility is key. When a cooling coil in an operating theatre failed, VMA immediately repaired the existing unit to maintain surgical operations while a new component was sourced. Despite the two-week lead time, the theatre was only offline for three days—demonstrating our commitment to proactive, solution-driven service.

Collaboration drives innovation and results
One of the key strengths of this project is the seamless cooperation between our electrical and HVAC teams. Internal synergy speeds up coordination and execution, which directly benefits the client. For example, shared tasks such as cable routing and electrical fine-tuning are carried out cross-functionally.
VMA also maintains close communication with GZA’s in-house technical teams. One of our technicians has been seconded to the hospital’s facility department at the client’s request—adding value by sharing knowledge of the building layouts and enhancing efficiency on site.
Introducing next-generation healthcare technology
Innovation is also at the heart of our service. At Sint-Jozef, VMA proposed and implemented a wireless nurse call system. Patients are now equipped with wristbands that allow real-time localisation and direct communication—enhancing both safety and response times. The system was developed in collaboration with the supplier and has been enthusiastically adopted by GZA.
